Good News!  - Resolution of the disrupted pavement near estate agent in the High St

   You may have noticed that an area of pavement outside the Estate Agents has lifted due to root growth from an ornamental cherry tree.  The area of pavement is a serious trip hazard and at least two people have taken falls with one elderly person suffering serious injury.  

   Several residents contacted the Civic Society asking if we could help to get something done about it.  We contacted Shropshire Council (SC) who subsequently placed red safety barriers around the affected area.  It has been confirmed that four trees were planted in the forecourt area of shops along the parade as part of an "Enhancement Scheme" some years ago.  The trees were to have been planted with suitable root directors to prevent roots affecting adjacent surfaces. Nevertheless the roots have in fact caused considerable damage to the pavement.

   We have been in regular correspondence with Shropshire Council Highways and pressing for a response for several months. We are pleased to report they have responded with good news.

   SC says “the highways team has been engaging with a specialist in our tree team to investigate suitable available options.  The pavement in the area is lifting and the trees planted there initially do not appear to be suitable for the location.    The existing trees will need to be removed as the likelihood is that the removal of the roots (necessary to rectify the pavement), will cause the trees to perish.  One tree is already noted to be in poor condition. We have received some options for some alternate tree species.“

    We have informed Albrighton Parish Council of this good outcome and they will be contacted by Shropshire Council regarding the type of replacement trees and no doubt our Tree Warden, Councillor Bob Watson, will be well qualified to advise on this. We understand that the work will involve removal of the existing four trees and tree roots, relocation of the tree pit, planting new trees and re-laying the heaved paving.

Public Meeting and AGM

on Monday 11^th October at the Red House.

Bar opens at 7pm with the meeting starting at 7.30pm.

Possible speakers are being contacted and the final programme will be finalised shortly. However we expect to provide a major report concerning what is being done to alleviate Flooding in the village – affects houses and the two roads under the bridges. We will also report on the winners of the School Awards Scheme and the Flower/Garden Competition, Pedestrian Access Ramp at the Station and other local items.
